A Letter from Ms. Lavin, our new English teacher

Dear Parents and Guardians,
My name is Christine Lavin and I will be the new teacher in your child's classroom! I am excited about the opportunity to work at the Martin Luther King Jr. School and to get to know you and your child.  I look forward to a happy and successful year! I am originally from Rhode Island but I now reside in Cambridge. I have a psychology and education background and received my masters degree in  elementary education from Lesley University.

In class we will explore reading through the literacy collaborative program.  Students will be working on their reading comprehension, writing persuasive essays, and working in guided reading groups.  In the math curriculum we will be discovering shapes and using number games to get students excited about math.  If you would like to contact me you can reach me through email at clavin@cpsd.us.  I am very eager to get started and to meet all of you!

Sincerely,
Christine Lavin

Weekly Newsletter is Now on the Blog!

Dear Parents,

Thank you for all of your support at the Scholastic Book Fair this week! The Book Fair would not have happened without your participation and support. We hope you and your child enjoy the books carefully selected by our librarians. And please feel free to let us know should you have any suggestions for future ones.

We also wanted to extend a special thank you to Folk-Man (kindergartener Lena’s dad). Because of his introduction, the immersion classroom received a dozen book donations from Bring Me a Book Foundation of San Francisco. This wonderful selection of Chinese children picture books will bring more reading fun to the children in the immersion program. Thank you!

Looking ahead, we will have the following events in the month of December.
  • Saturday December 8, 11AM-noon Kindergarten Open House for Prospective Families – Event will be held in the school library. Please help spread the word. Volunteers are welcome!
  • Thursday December 20* - We are planning to have a Pajama Day for students. All of the immersion JK/K students may choose to wear pajamas to school on this day.
  • Friday December 21, 8-9:30AM* - We are planning a special holiday family breakfast and student presentation. All of the students in the immersion classrooms will participate in the presentation. We hope that this will be a great opportunity for all of the families in the immersion programs to come together.
* More details for both events will come soon.

This week, the children learn a new poem 《跳房子》 “Hopscotch"

Another fun way to speak in a language of your choice - VOKI!

Scoop.it!

In her free time, Vivian learned a new web tool from one of her former colleagues in Concord.  Thus is the creation of a new Scoop.it!  Hope you enjoy it and please check back often!

Happy Snow Day!
