A Letter from Ms. Lavin, our new English teacher

Dear Parents and Guardians,
My name is Christine Lavin and I will be the new teacher in your child's classroom! I am excited about the opportunity to work at the Martin Luther King Jr. School and to get to know you and your child.  I look forward to a happy and successful year! I am originally from Rhode Island but I now reside in Cambridge. I have a psychology and education background and received my masters degree in  elementary education from Lesley University.

In class we will explore reading through the literacy collaborative program.  Students will be working on their reading comprehension, writing persuasive essays, and working in guided reading groups.  In the math curriculum we will be discovering shapes and using number games to get students excited about math.  If you would like to contact me you can reach me through email at clavin@cpsd.us.  I am very eager to get started and to meet all of you!

Sincerely,
Christine Lavin

Week of Dec 17, 2012

December 17 6-8PM - Parents Listening Session on Future of Chinese Immersion Program
Session will be held in the school library.

December 20 2-3:15PM - All School Winter Concert
A school music concert will be held on December 20.  Your child will sing songs with all students from the King School.  Families should arrive at the school gym at 1:45 to be seated.

December 21 8-9:30AM - Parent Breakfast and Student Presentation
Next week is a very eventful week!  The students are really excited to perform for you next Friday, December 21 from 8:30-9:30AM in the cafeteria.  We are thrilled that all of the families will have a chance to get to know one another at the parent potluck prior to the student presentation.  Please click link to sign up for food items https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0At8IdrW_tmHRdDVNU3hsLTRRcUNxaXZIM3VpYkJraVE - gid=0.

Weekly Newsletter is Now on the Blog!

Dear Parents,

Thank you for all of your support at the Scholastic Book Fair this week! The Book Fair would not have happened without your participation and support. We hope you and your child enjoy the books carefully selected by our librarians. And please feel free to let us know should you have any suggestions for future ones.

We also wanted to extend a special thank you to Folk-Man (kindergartener Lena’s dad). Because of his introduction, the immersion classroom received a dozen book donations from Bring Me a Book Foundation of San Francisco. This wonderful selection of Chinese children picture books will bring more reading fun to the children in the immersion program. Thank you!

Looking ahead, we will have the following events in the month of December.
  • Saturday December 8, 11AM-noon Kindergarten Open House for Prospective Families – Event will be held in the school library. Please help spread the word. Volunteers are welcome!
  • Thursday December 20* - We are planning to have a Pajama Day for students. All of the immersion JK/K students may choose to wear pajamas to school on this day.
  • Friday December 21, 8-9:30AM* - We are planning a special holiday family breakfast and student presentation. All of the students in the immersion classrooms will participate in the presentation. We hope that this will be a great opportunity for all of the families in the immersion programs to come together.
* More details for both events will come soon.

This week, the children learn a new poem 《跳房子》 “Hopscotch"

Another fun way to speak in a language of your choice - VOKI!

Scoop.it!

In her free time, Vivian learned a new web tool from one of her former colleagues in Concord.  Thus is the creation of a new Scoop.it!  Hope you enjoy it and please check back often!

Happy Snow Day!

Math Unit 2

Unit 2: Making Shapes and Designing Quilts (2D Geometry)
October 17 – November 9 (14 sessions with 3 extra days)
Notes:
●    Add new Session CPS 2.A after Session 2.2: Defining Attributes of a Triangle.
●    Sessions 3.1 through 3.3 can be omitted from classroom instruction.
Standards:
1.G.1    Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non- defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); for a wide variety of shapes; build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes.
Scope of Standard:
●    The 2011 Massachusetts Math Framework Grade 1 standards emphasize distinction between defining and non-defining attributes.
●    Attributes refer to any characteristic of a shape. Students use attribute language to describe a given two- dimensional shape: number of sides, number of vertices/points, straight sides, closed. A child might describe a triangle as “right side up” or “red.” These attributes are not defining because they are not relevant to whether a shape is a triangle or not. Students should articulate ideas such as, “A triangle is a triangle because it has three straight sides and is closed.” It is important that students are exposed to both regular and irregular shapes so that they can communicate defining attributes.
●    Students should also use appropriate language to describe a given three-dimensional shape: number of faces, number of vertices/points, number of edges.
●    Students should compare and contrast two-and three-dimensional figures using defining attributes.
Unit Considerations:
● ●
1.G.2
Students observe attributes of shape by sorting, drawing, and decomposing common shapes. To fully address this standard, see the Math Notes and Daily Practice/Homework in the Investigations and the CCSS Teacher Guide.  Compose two-dimensional shapes (rectangles, squares, trapezoids, triangles, half-circles, and quarter-circles) or three-dimensional shapes (cubes, right rectangular prisms, right circular cones, and right circular cylinders) to create a composite shape, and compose new shapes from the composite shape2.
Scope of Standard:
●    The ability to describe, use and visualize the effect of composing and decomposing shapes is an important mathematical skill. It is not only relevant to geometry, but is related to children’s ability to compose and decompose numbers. Students may use pattern blocks, plastic shapes, tangrams, or computer environments to make new shapes. The teacher can provide students with cutouts of shapes and ask them to combine them to make a particular shape.
Unit Considerations:
●    The focus of this unit is on 2-D shapes; work with decomposing 3-D shapes is done in Unit 9.
●    To fully address this standard, see the Classroom Routine: Quick Images in the Investigations and the CCSS Teacher Guide.
●    Electronic resources for this unit can be found at www.pearsonsuccessnet.com.
